Klemm 35D
G-KLEM WkNr: 1979

History

Dr. Ing Hans Klemm had worked for the Daimler Aircraft Company after the First World War. In 1926 he formed his own company, the first aircraft he built was the L25, a low wing monoplane that flew for the first time in 1927, powered by a 20hp Mercedes Engine. About 600 Klemm L25's were built powered by various and progressively more powerful engines. Several aircraft were fitted with floats and the type saw some service with the Luftwaffe in its early days.

Klemm35D

One of the most important Klemm designs was the KL 35, designed like all other types produced by the company, for private ownership. The prototype KL35A flew for the first time in 1935 powered by a Hirth HM 60R four cylinder inverted air cooled engine.

In 1938 the improved Klemm KL35D was produced, designed to serve as a trainer with the Luftwaffe. The KL35D differed in being powered by a Hirth HM504 A-02 Engine, producing 105hp and had a braced and strengthened undercarriage with spats removed. Apart from the standard wheel undercarriage the Klemm 35D could also be fitted with floats and skis.

This variant saw considerable service with the Luftwaffe pilot training schools during the Second World War.

General Construction:

The Klemm 35D is a Single Engine low wing Gull Wing monoplane of mixed Metal, Wood and Fabric construction with a fixed undercarriage and Tail Skid the latter now being replaced by a Tail Wheel.
